TITLE BRIDGING SLOW OSCILLATIONS IN THE CEREBRAL CORTEX AND BURSTING ACTION POTENTIALS IN PANCREATIC ISLET BETA-CELLS

ABSTRACT
Slow-wave oscillations (SWO) induced in the entorhinal cortex (EC) by kainate receptor activation were suggested to originate from the interaction between recurrent excitatory network activity and ATP-dependent metabolic processes (Cunningham et al, 2006). The current model of SWO explains alternation of active and silent phases by activation of NaK-ATPases during the active phase and the consequent modulation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels (KATP) in response to the lowered ATP level. Although correct qualitatively, this model is questionable because the ATP consumption should be stoichiometric with sodium fluxes and thus would not be enough to account for noticeable changes in KATP-conductance. Along with this criticism, the talk will present a refined model borrowed from that of the pancreatic beta-cell bursting (PBB), one in which Ca ions, mitochondria, and endoplasmatic reticuluum play a key role. Comparison between SWO and PBB highlights important similarities between the two, helps understanding pancreatic islets bursts using the EC data, and, in turn, may help us in understanding slow oscillations in EC using the wealth of data available from pancreatic islets.
